Autumn hair shedding: why it increases and how to stop it before winter

Categories : Hair , Man

If you've noticed more hair on your brush, your pillow, or in the shower drain over the past few weeks, you're not the only one. October and November are, along with spring, the months when the most hair shedding is reported in salons and pharmacies, and there's a very specific biological explanation for it.

At Cosméticos de la Rosa we explain why this happens and which anti-hair-loss treatments are worth adding now to slow it down before winter sets in.

1. Why more hair falls out in autumn

It's called seasonal shedding, and it's a natural process: during summer, the hair follicle enters a resting phase (telogen) due to greater sun exposure and longer daylight hours, and that "paused" hair falls out a few weeks later, coinciding with the drop in light in autumn. It isn't an illness or a warning sign on its own, but it is the ideal time to strengthen the scalp and shorten this phase.

2. When it's worth paying closer attention

A somewhat more visible shedding for six to ten weeks in autumn is considered normal. What's worth checking with a specialist is shedding that hasn't eased after two or three months, that comes with visible receding or bald patches on the scalp, or that stays just as intense all year round. In those cases, cosmetic treatments help as support, but it's worth ruling out other causes first.

3. Shampoos and tonics, the first line of defense

Anti-hair-loss shampoo doesn't stop shedding on its own, but it cleans the scalp without being harsh and prepares the ground for the tonic or treatment to work better. The Kinmen Force Pack (shampoo + tonic) by KIN Cosmetics or the Maurens anti-hair-loss shampoo are the usual base of any routine at this time of year, applied daily or every other day throughout autumn. If you'd rather use just the tonic, the Kinmen Force tonic is also available on its own.

4. Ampoules and intensive treatments, to reinforce the follicle

When shedding is more noticeable than usual, ampoules are the step that makes the biggest difference, because they concentrate active ingredients in direct contact with the scalp. The Bioplavit Ampoules by Maurens, with placenta and vitamins, or the Kerantea ampoule treatment, formulated with keratin and nutrients, are applied in an intensive course lasting several weeks. The Kinactif N.8 pack (shampoo + ampoules) by KIN and the Cipexton ampoules by Liheto, with plant extracts, are two more options designed for this same intensive phase, as is the Alopecina X-100 by Maurens as a shock treatment.

5. Traditional tonics and serums, for maintenance

Once the most intense phase has passed, classic hair tonics help keep the scalp in good condition for the rest of autumn and winter. The Ron Quina by Kesmar, with quinine and rosemary, has been one of the go-to tonics for years, applied with a gentle massage to activate circulation. For men, the Densify Forte serum by Beardburys is an alternative designed specifically for the male scalp. There's also the Kerantea shampoo with placenta, with placenta, for those who'd rather start with the shampoo.

6. The key isn't the product, it's consistency

No anti-hair-loss treatment gives results in a week, because the hair cycle is slow: it takes at least eight to twelve weeks of continuous use to notice a real change in density. The routine that works best combines a gentle shampoo for daily use, a tonic or ampoules three to five times a week, and a couple of minutes of scalp massage when applying it. Conclusion: Frequently asked questions about autumn shedding

We answer the questions we get asked most often at this time of year:

Is it normal to lose so much hair in autumn?
Yes, as long as it lasts a few weeks and isn't accompanied by visible bald patches or receding areas. It's seasonal shedding, a cyclical process linked to changes in light.
How long do I need to use an anti-hair-loss treatment to see results?
At least two to three months of continuous use, because the hair growth cycle is slow and results aren't immediate.
Can I use shampoo, tonic, and ampoules at the same time?
Yes, in fact that's the combination that works best: the shampoo cleans and prepares the scalp, while the tonic or ampoules provide the active ingredients that reinforce the follicle.
